Replace your ISP's modem with your own router (VDSL/PPPoE)

Yes, you can run your own router on a raw VDSL line, even when the ISP says not supported, as long as you have the three pieces of connection info they do not always volunteer. Here is what you need, how to set it up, and what you gain and give up by doing it.

Can you actually do it?

Usually, yes, on a standard VDSL or PPPoE service.

Not supported from the ISP almost always means we will not help you configure it and we will not troubleshoot faults on it, rather than it is technically impossible. The line does not care what router is plugged in, as long as the router speaks the same language the line expects.

The three things you need

Get these from your ISP, or read them out of the modem they supplied, before you start.

  1. The PPPoE username and password. This is how the line authenticates you, and it is usually not the same as your account login. If the ISP will not hand it over, you can often read it from the supplied modem's WAN settings, or it may be on your setup paperwork.
  2. The VLAN ID, if your ISP uses one. Some ISPs tag the connection with a VLAN number; if yours does and you do not set it, the router gets nothing. Plenty of ISPs do not use one at all. Ask, or check the supplied modem's WAN or VLAN page.
  3. The MTU, set to 1492. PPPoE adds 8 bytes of overhead to the standard 1500, so the correct MTU is 1492. Leave it at 1500 and you get the classic symptom: small pages load fine, but big pages and some sites hang or half-load.

How to set it up

  1. Connect your router to the VDSL line, either through the router's own built-in VDSL modem, or via a separate VDSL modem set to bridge mode feeding the router's WAN port.
  2. Set the WAN connection type to PPPoE and enter the username and password.
  3. If your ISP uses a VLAN, set the VLAN ID on the WAN.
  4. Set the MTU to 1492.
  5. Save and connect. Give it a minute to authenticate: you want to see a WAN address and a working connection.
  6. Reboot once, then load a few heavy sites to confirm the MTU is right.

What you gain

  • Better WiFi. ISP-supplied units are usually the cheapest box that does the job. A decent router, or a mesh system, is a real step up in range and speed.
  • A proper VPN. Reach your home or office network from anywhere, or send your traffic out through a VPN. Most ISP boxes cannot.
  • Real control. Guest networks, proper firewall rules, your own DNS, per-device controls, static routes.
  • Multi-WAN. Add a second connection, a 4G or 5G SIM is the usual backup, for automatic failover when the main line drops. That is the build behind a backup connection that fails over automatically.

What you lose

  • ISP support on that router. The moment there is a fault, the ISP will point at your gear. You need to be willing to swap their modem back in to prove a fault is on the line, not your router.
  • Managed updates. The ISP will not push firmware or config to your router. You own the updates and the settings.
  • Their phone service, sometimes. If your landline runs through the supplied modem as VoIP, moving to your own router can break it unless you carry the phone settings across, and not every ISP publishes those.

Keep the ISP's modem in a drawer. It is both your test tool and your fallback: swapping it back in is the clean way to prove a fault is on the line, the same split-test logic as working out whether a dropout is your wifi or the ISP.

The short version

On a standard VDSL or PPPoE line you can nearly always run your own router. You need the PPPoE username and password, the VLAN ID if your ISP uses one, and the MTU set to 1492. You gain better WiFi, VPN, control and multi-WAN; you lose ISP support on that router and their managed updates. Keep the supplied modem for testing and to prove any line fault.

General guidance. Settings vary by ISP and line type, and running your own router means the ISP may decline to support faults on it.
